We reported earlier this week that a musician in the Jönköpings Sinfonietta had been fired after being accused of hitting a hall manager during an internal meeting.

The musician, named Magnus, denies it. So do 12 of the 15 people present in the room.

The brass section of one orchestra posted a picture of all its musicians with one hand on each other’s shoulders as an act of solidarity.

Today, every other Swedish orchestra, has posted a solidarity pic – and so have some others in Denmark and Norway.

#backamagnus is the hashtag. Spread the word.

Maybe this hand on shoulder thing is all that John Eliot Gardiner did to the LSO player last year when there was all the fuss about him ‘assaulting’ ?

    • Bruce says:

Never heard about that; but in the US, any unwanted physical contact can be called assault if the “assaulted” person wishes it. Here in Spokane, there was a scene in the court house a few months ago where one lawyer threatened to file assault charges against another because he put one hand on his shoulder during a heated discussion in the hallway outside the courtroom. It was in front of many witnesses; I haven’t heard anything else about it, so I suspect it faded away when the “assaulted” lawyer calmed down.

(Of course, often “unwanted physical contact” really is assault; but once in awhile someone decides to blow things out of proportion.)

        What a weird country…

        • Doug says:

You mean Sweden? Yes it’s very weird to willingly allow the destruction of your on culture and nation but focus laser-like on shoulder touching.

        • Mack the knife says:

Its not the country, its that they are lawyers and lawyers are litigious.

      • Saxon Broken says:

Yes, Bruce is right. Unwanted deliberate physical contact actually is, technically, assault. If it is viewed as threatening to the person being touched.

    • Anon says:

What about the time he threw water over a player, or hurled the score? Swept under the carpet, as he was being “artistic” . This attitude is appalling.

  • Facts says:

Hello Norman, some facts edit please.

“The brass section of the orchestra, where Magnus played, posted a picture of all its musicians with one hand on each other’s shoulders as an act of solidarity.”

    That didn’t happen.
The initiative started in Stockholm from other orchestras since people are aware that the Sinfonietta couldn’t post a picture like that due to the aleady horrible situation at the workplace.

So there is no picture like that (yet). Just to clarify!

  • Christine says:

The theme of putting a hand on a shoulder is representative of what Magnus did – put his hand on his boss’ shoulder, ie committed “violence”
