Exclusive tummy shots of Dudamel conducting
mainThis is dress rehearsal footage of Gustavo Dudamel preparing for his Met debut this week in Otello.
As he heats up, his shirt loses traction with his trousers.
Good to see some passion in that pit.

Solti has got to be the Father of all tummy-exposing, underwear-showing, over-heated-passionate opera conducting in history:

It is one of the conducting hazards, a profession full of physical dangers – as we know, Lully stamped on his foot during a performance and died of it. Brahms conducted in Leipzig with a cord around his trousers since he had not been able to find his belt, and the cord gradually got loose so that the audience was held in suspense about when it all would come down.
Famous American conductor Danny Kaye knew how garment exposure can undeline certain structural problems of the profession:

It’s a haphazard profession anyway:

Well, we’ll give the immortal Solti a pass….otherwise, I love how everyone in the orchestra wears jacket and tie.
Fritz Reiner would have hated Solti. For so many reasons.
Pure jealousy. Reiner’s gut would never compare to Solti’s. On the other hand, they were both Hungarian.
They would have known each other, and have seen each other conduct. Why don’t you tell us how you know of their relationship, and tell us an anecdote.

Now we know what yo give him for Christmas; longer T-shirts…
All the greats (Furtwangler, Toscanini, Horenstein, et al.) just had “one-packs.”
But these three are packed with the insight, wisdom, and musicality which the young Dude lacks.
Note: tummies = children; abdomens = adults.
And this is relevant because…?
Because it generates clicks on this website.
You might notice with this Hollywood pop culture arm
waver the noise level changes little while the arm waver
gets himself into a frenzy .Eye candy for the masses .
I’ve played under him. While I wouldn’t quite put him in my top 10 over my 30+ years in a major orchestra, I do have a great deal of respect for him. He is by no means a fraud; far from it. He is skilled and musical, an appealing individual who attracts people to classical music who otherwise might not have us on their radar. I am mystified as to why some might regard this as a bad thing.
Maybe because many people overreact at the thought that his fame and hype are disproportionate to his musical talent. The latter seems backed up by your informed assessment, which you reasonably put into perspective.
A very generous and fair assessment. He is a good conductor, but not a great. That is nevertheless, very talented indeed.
A true master of the 4-beat pattern. And the syllables he emits are almost linked to the Italian libretto. Never mind, enthusiasm is everything! 😉
It happens to the best of them….Solti:

much worse mishap was Nelsons conducting Mahler 2 in a short jacket and low trousers; in America I think they call it plumber’s crack…..
Tummy-shots of conductors are like butt-crack shots of plumbers: frequent, unwanted, and not that special.
I’m a musician who’s worked with a lot of conductors, so I’ve seen this a lot. It’s just a thing that happens. It’s not unusual.
