This was Yeol Eum Son before the Ukraine War.

And after.

  • Hans says:

Publishing this in such terrible taste. There are other artists who have worked with Gergiev—Abduraimov, Babayan, Cho, Lugansky etc.—who have never endorsed his politics. And working with a great conductor should never be construed as an endorsement of his person. This post is no different from far-right propaganda. Take this down.

    • ENRIQUE SANCHEZ says:

You are twisting this whole situation out of shape. But ordering MR. LEBRECHT to take this down is just a tiny bit demanding if not “far-right” of you. Free Press has no taste – that’s the idea. So, accept what is on his page or go elsewhere. So simple.

      • MJA says:

How very totalitarian of you, Enrique Sanchez. I thought it was the ability to express dissent, as Hans has done to huge support, that is “the idea” of a free press, not a requirement to toe the (often, as here, vile) party line or “go elsewhere” – so it’s not that simple, really, is it?

    • Karl says:

Totally right Hans, i dont know wtf is going on with this guy….

  • Concertgebouw79 says:

I think it’s the fisrt time Norman that you talk about Yeol Eum Son (I’am a big admiror I have to say) in a title. Never too late… The reality is that she did the Tchaikovsky contest the year Trifonov won and she finnished second, Seong-Jin Cho was in the third place. it was in 2011. She did also several concerts with the Marisnkii Orchestra few years ago. But she never did records with Gergiev.

      • Concertgebouw79 says:

She was not in title.. anyway it not a big deal at all… There are more serious things today. But she deserves more attention and it’s a pity that her last record about Kapustin for Onyx didn’t have a attention in the press. And it’s a shame that so many big orchestras lately exept Budapest didn’t call her.

        • Peter San Diego says:

She played the Mozart c minor concerto with the San Diego Symphony last week, led by guest conductor Jonathon Heyward. She was superb. Heyward was also excellent; he shone particularly in his conducting of the Shostakovich 9th.

          • Concertgebouw79 says:

Unfortunatly I have seen her only once in concert. But there’are a lot of things with her on Youtube. But we must write her name in korean 손열음.

          • Korean says:

As a korean i need to ask why would one write 손열음’s name in korean tho?
Would you be able to spell names correctly in chinese or japanese musicians as well?(and read?)

          • Concertgebouw79 says:

I don’t understand your message. I just have copied Yeol’s name 손열음.

  • Roman says:

Are we now going after everyone who had even distant contacts with people who are affiliated with Putin? What about people who had contacts with those who had contacts with those who are affiliated with Putin?

What about those who visited such performances?

Following this logic we should probably also publicly shame everyone who has performed in Russia in the past 8 years (almost all classical concerts have some patronage from the Russian government). Let’s shame for Russian visits Yuja, Seong-Jin Cho, Andras Schiff, Dudamel and many others.

    • Concertgebouw79 says:

It’s clear that there’s before and after the 24-2-2022. If you have done concerts in Russia before that day as pianist or guest conductor you don’t have to be blamed or it would be very stupid.

      • Roman says:

Just to make it clear: my post was sarcasm. I hope that people liked it because they understood it and not otherwise.

    • V.Lind says:

In terms of degrees of separation, I did not attend the Mariinsky’s (with Gergiev) last tour of Canada but I am only one person removed from him.

I find his politics and toadying and probable corruption ($150 million worth of property in Italy?) vile, and his silence on the evil invasion of Ukraine reprehensible in the extreme.

But I do not feel culpable for knowing someone who knows him.

  • Bonetti Micaela says:

Oohhhh, no, Mr Lebrecht, you never wrote about Mademoiselle Yeol Eum Son, a splendid pianist and human being I very much admire, and today: this???

  • Karl says:

Mr Lebrecht, you raise a valid point. Many of our great artists are so due to being malleable.

  • Steven says:

The “after” composite photo apparently shows that a distinguished pianist, Yeol Eum Son, changed dresses during a concert in order to wear the colors of the Ukrainian flag.

The “before” photo shows that she performed with a major conductor who has been mentioned in 41 pages of posts on this website dating back 13 years, mostly without reference to his alarming politics. To pretend or suggest that it shows anything else is reprehensible.

I’m glad and not at all surprised to see that Yeol Eum Son supports Ukraine.

  • Stephen Lawrence says:

I don’t find this a problematic post. it’s just saying, here is another example of someone who is now doing something different from what they did before February 24th, 2022. I don’t think the colour red in the first photograph is significant. I mean lots of people wear red; but the colour of the second photograph is clearly important

  • S&E says:

Do have a look at her Mozart no. 21 which she did at the Tchaikowsy competition. On You Tube.
