German opera appoints American boss

Wuppertal Opera has named Rebekah Rota as its next intendant, taking over next year.

Rebekah is presently deputy head of opera at  Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe. Before that, she was an international soprano.

A Californian by birth, she has a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Michigan.

    Berthold Schneider’s tenure at Wuppertal has brought the theatre back into the German opera conciousness. I hope that Rebekah Rota can build further on this.

    Why has Schneider already left?

    • I think both Laura Berman in Hannover and Karen Stone in Magdeburg are doing so much for German opera houses. I like the cultural exchange and remember when I was Inspizientin in Kiel and Braunschweig
