  • One should understand the simplistic binary mode of thinking exhibited by many middle Americans, particularly rednecks, for whom political (or any other kind of) subtlety is outside their mental capacity. This was exhibited to me in the 1980s when I was speaking to someone out there – not at all a redneck though. I ventured the view that the Vietnam war had proved a disaster for the USA, their having lost nearly 60,000 personnel and ultimately lost the war. There was a short pause, and then he countered ‘Oh, are you a communist then?’.
I hold no brief for any political party as I don’t want to have my thinking bound up in a neat package manufactured by other people. During my lifetime I have seen great presidents and lousy ones from both US parties. That being said, I find it most remarkable that both Abraham Lincoln and Trump represented the same party! Neither have I seen any Democrat president impose or even advocate communism during his term of office. There’s about as much chance of it being accepted in the USA as in Iran or Saudi Arabia.
