The tenor has been talking about that multi-million Hallelujah hit that he sang with his eight year-old daughter, Virginia.

‘It was a true Christmas present that Virginia gifted to me. It was very emotional but there was no apprehension: I focused on the beauty and intimacy and I tried to convey the serenity, encouragement and reassurance to Virginia.

‘Although Virginia, was practically born and raised on stage and behind the scenes, this was her official debut.

‘No, she wasn’t nervous, she is a very determined child, and certainly her piano and dance studies have helped her understand when you need to give your all….’

To ask if she was nervous is silly. Children do not get nervous to perform. Nerves don’t become an issue until self-consciousness sets in, at adolescence.

Emphatically NOT true. I speak from experience.

Interesting to see how many downvotes I got for saying an eight-year-old doesn’t get nervous. It doesn’t take away from the loveliness of her performance to say that nerves don’t factor into it.

        V. Lind, I had the impression you were more of a writer, but if you were nervous to perform as a child, I accept that you may have been an anomaly. My personal experience as a musician includes having parents who were musicians (one of whom taught children), starting my instrument at age three, a career of 30+ years as a performer, having numerous nieces and nephews who have pursued or are pursuing careers in music, socializing almost exclusively with musicians since childhood, and marrying musicians twice.

I have sat through more recitals given by children than I can count. Sometimes they’re good — even moving — and sometimes they’re not. When a child doesn’t perform well, it’s usually because he or she is not prepared, not focused, or both. I’ve simply never seen a child plagued by self-doubt, insecurity, or any of the other things that get in our way later on.

Childhood is simple. Imagine if you could go back in time and experience the joy of singing with your dad. What could be easier or more beautiful? So downvote or be mad or whatever. It doesn’t bother me. I’m just saying how it is.
