Zubin Mehta has cancelled the Philharmonic in early June for reasons unspecified.

The orchestra made a local call to Salzburg before announcing that ‘wonderful’ Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla will take over the Zubin dates, adding a Lithuanian tone-poem to the pre-arranged programme.

The former Birmingham principal conductor is looking more and more like Munich’s choice to succeed the self-exiled Gergiev.

  • Mick the Knife says:

Gatti should be the most sought after conductor.

  • Gustavo says:

    Mälkki, please.

  • Petros Linardos says:

“After the second baby she gave up the Birmingham job, saying she did not want to be a music director any more. ”
“All this iconoclasm is commendable. Mirga is stubbornly blazing the way for women to have a full life in the podium. It won’t be easy when she comes back but what she has shown so far is both courage and conviction. The next page in her story will be fascinating.”

Karina Cannelakis is endlessly more interesting, learning constantly new repertoire and doing fantastically prepared and detailed performances, all over the world…With kid, pregnancy, and family. But she keeps her private life absolutely secret.True professional.

    • Henry williams says:

Who looks after her young children while she is
      Away

  • trumpetherald says:

I am sorry, but this is more like the wish being the father of thought…..There is another ,far greater woman conductor in the running. In contrast to the really interesting ladies like the fantastic Karina Cannelakis and Susanna Mälkki, Ms.Grazynite Tyla´s calender has many gaps, and most other top conductors, like the two mentioned above, are not available at short notice….Sorry, she isn´t a hot ticket.

  • Sue Sonata Form says:

Time for a changing of the guard methinks.

  • Fiddleman says:

Why does subbing for an indisposed Conductor make her a leading contender for the chef position? And what’s this about self-exiled Gergiev? As I recall he was fired.

  • Dave Haddock says:

She was useless in Birmingham, anyone who wants her is welcome. Bye!
