Is there really a best? For just audio, listen to Martinelli/Tibbett and Caruso/Ruffo. While Caruso never performed the role of Otello onstage, the 2 recordings he did from it (Ora รจ per sempre addio and this duet), the effects are spine-tingling.
And there is Giovanni Martinelli and Lawrence Tibbett, hobbled by Victor’s dead as a doornail sound but there are also some Metropolitan Opera air-checks on YouTube.
