The Vickers excerpt is glorious – a great way to head into the weekend. The clip also relates to another of your recent posts about premature audience elation. Verdi ends the duet powerfully in the orchestra which is drowned out by the applause (at the Met).

not one of them comes near the glory of Mario Del Monaco and Gobbi in the roles

Don’t forget the best best of all (Domingo and Milnes):

Is there really a best? For just audio, listen to Martinelli/Tibbett and Caruso/Ruffo. While Caruso never performed the role of Otello onstage, the 2 recordings he did from it (Ora รจ per sempre addio and this duet), the effects are spine-tingling.

  • David K. Nelson says:

And there is Giovanni Martinelli and Lawrence Tibbett, hobbled by Victor’s dead as a doornail sound but there are also some Metropolitan Opera air-checks on YouTube.
