Jessye Norman gets a room
mainThe Wigmore Hall is to rename its green room.
‘Dich, teure Halle, gruss’ ich!’ Jessye Norman quoted Wagner’s most famous aria Tannhäuser on her signed picture to Wigmore Hall: ‘You, dear hall, do I greet!’
In June, during our 120th Anniversary Celebrations, Wigmore Hall’s green room will be renamed the ‘Jessye Norman Green Room’ in memory of the legendary soprano who opened more Wigmore Hall seasons than any other artist in the history of the Hall.
Jessye Norman died last October, aged 74
This is so lovely and also a name that trips off the tongue easily.
A gorgeous voice. Jessye Norman deserves the honor.
Jessye Norman actually died on 30 September 2019, not “last October”.
It is always a thill to meet Jessye in the Green Room after her concerts in the 80s and 90s. I will always treasure those memories and still keep the programme books and song sheets she autographed. Brava Jessye and looking forward to the reopening of Wigmore Hall.
Meanwhile, her family still hasn’t gotten around to putting a marker on her grave.
That is so very sad and shocking to hear. RIP and sing with the Angels, Jessye
