The death has been announced of Rocco Filippini, an outstanding cellist and advocate of contemporary music who often partnered Maurizio Pollini in recital.

Rocco, who was 77, was professor of cello in Milan and Rome and cofounder of the Walter Stauffer Academy in Cremona.

He premiered several works by Salvatore Sciarrino.

This is his tremendous recording of the first Shostakovich concerto.

Rocco was also the cellist of the marvelous Trio do Milano (with pianist Bruno Canino and violinist Mariana Sirbu). Wonderfully warm musician and person. RIP

    The warmth of his playing
in this is very present. My
condolences go out to those who knew and made music with him. He must have been a lovely man: it comes through on the video, and through his life’s choices. RIP

And I recall a very creditable set of the Bach Suites from this artist.
