mainViolist Hsin-Yun Huang has sent us this glorious video memoir of the pianist Derek Han who left us this week, far too soon.
She adds: ‘Derek was an extraordinarily devoted son, and despite his busy itinerary he would also spend weeks at a time with his mother who lived in California. We would have endless chats about the care and needs of our aging parents. I knew he was someone who made dinners for her, tucked her into bed, administered medications etc. She only passed away just last year — with him at her bedside.
‘This was a life interrupted, and we lost a rarity: a true artist who also keenly understood the turning wheels of the business world.
‘When we last saw each other two weeks ago he was so lively, full of ideas and plans for the future. I am finding it very very difficult to accept this reality, and can only express what a huge privilege it has been to have known him. I will continue to be inspired by his love for life.’
Glad to hear he was a good son and cared for his mother in her old age. American culture is atrocious in this regard. We should be caring for our elderly as we care for our children: in the home, with love, patience, and respect.
Easily and glibly said. When your elderly parent can’t walk, is incontinent, has some dementia, tries to get up three or four times a night, etc. and you have to look after the grandchildren while your children work, let alone trying to still work part-time yourself, things ain’t so easy unless you’re able to afford the horrendous cost of 24-hour at home nursing care.

That is a time period of over 13 years, with 3,001 deaths following ALL vaccinations administered during that time frame.

I don’t know what vintage this interview is, but it’s rather strange IMO the way Han is arguing that live performance will continue even though CD-technology is so good.
In case anyone is still interested in the headline question, I am suggesting two main reasons: 1) Definition of “live” has become considerably wider, particularly during the last fifteen months (it used to imply an audience present but there have been almost no audiences anywhere lately), and 2) Improved recording/editing audio equipment makes it possible now to create seamless musical results by combining portions of several takes into a nearly perfect whole.
