As Sir Thomas Beecham once said, “Ravinia is the only train station in the world with its own private orchestra.”

  • sam says:

Once the summer workshops of Levine and Conlon and American singers, Ravinia no longer offers operas.

What is Ravinia lately but film scores (with films) and 1812 (with fireworks)? The rest is, like so many other American summer festivals, pop, jazz and magic shows.

    • Peter San Diego says:

Perhaps Haydon can return Ravinia to its artistic roots.

    • Keith says:

Exactly! When summer festivals, like Ravinia, sold out to pop and rock it was the end of classical music festivals in America.

    • Old Man in the Midwest says:

Correct. The CSO is just a sideshow to what makes the $$$.

But they come with a heavy price tag and the films and pop/rock pays the bills.

So suck it up and make hay while you can.

And stay 6 feet apart on the lawn if you go.

  • GCMP says:

Candide semi-staged last year. Opera can happen – but alas it is much reduced in every way except pop/rock

  • justsaying says:

hm, trace the classical/opera/orchestral diet at Caramoor over the years he was there. Guessing Ravinia wants someone with a track record for downsizing its classical component (what’s left of it already).
