Just in: Dame Vera Lynn is gone
mainThe World War Two morale-booster has died in her East Sussex home, at the age of 103.
‘We’ll meet again’
A girl from East Ham, known as ‘the forces’ sweetheart’ she toured every front of the war singing her two torch songs, ‘We’ll meet again’ and ‘The White Cliffs of Dover’.
RIP, fine lady, and many thanks for everything you did.
Not ashamed to admit that I shed a few tears at this news. And I’m sure I won’t be alone.
You’re not. I was born years after the war, but my parents and every adult I knew had been through it and I was raised on its stories — and songs. I knew of Vera Lynn and her most famous songs from the cradle, so I join those who feel they have lost someone today.
Simply the best…
Beautiful!
Goodbye to a wonderful lady who gave so much in uplifting the soldiers and their families during WW2 and more. She will be lovingly remembered.
Hello-I agree entirely with you. But may I please enquire about the origin of your unusual surname ? My reason for asking is that I own a Salmson car of the 1930s & have never been able to find the origin of the name-would love to know !
God bless her lovely soul. I remember. Why, she was almost older than the BBC.
And wiser
She was born 5 years before the BBC was founded.

Don’t know whether this link will work but her version of ‘My Way’ outshines all others. As did she over decades. The last, and the best, of the few in more ways than one.
Wow. That was really good. Thank you.
Such sad news. I’m thankful she lived such a long life.
And I’m grateful to have known her via recordings; what a sweet voice! And from everything I have read, she was a sweet lady as well.
Yes, dear, dear, woman: we’ll meet again.
