The unknown Elgar melody that turned up in an autograph book has sold for a bargain £9,000 – £5,400 for the music sheet and £3,600 for the rest of the autograph book.

    Here is a brief transcription of it.

    It is unclear what he intended for the bass note. A trill? A tremolo? Neither?

    I leave that to the Elgar scholars.
