Shock as Rossini festival boss quits after 38 seasons
mainThe resignation of Gianfranco Mariotti today came as a shock to the Italian opera infrastructure. He seemed both indestructible and indispensable. The festival at Pesaro is one of the best of its kind.
But the Court of Auditors has raised questions about his contract and Mariotti decided to step aside.
Are people still listening to Rossini these days? It’s the musical equivalent of tinned fruit.

Someone must be listening. Operabase has Rossini as #4 for number of productions worldwide from 2011/12 through 2015/16, after Verdi, Mozart and Puccini. For 2017 they list 258 productions of Rossini operas in 172 cities, and for 2016 they list 284 productions in 179 cities. Hopefully you were joking, but if not, I agree with the comment made by SC.
