Orchestras

It looks like the UK has fallen down the world orchestral rankings since Brexit.

This summer, the elite Lucerne Festival is pulling in top teams from Berlin, Vienna, Amsterdam, Prague, Munich, Budapest,, Cleveland, Hamburg, Zurich, Leipzig and, for heaven’s sake, Paris.

Nothing from London, apart from a single appearance by the ACE-promoted diversity Chineke! orchestra (remember them? the ones who refused to play the national anthem…)

Check the programme.

I wonder if paying for work visas for 120+ people had anything to do with this….

  • Concertgebouw79 says:

I think that the departure of Rattle from the LSO and the deep stagnation of the new concert hall projet have made the fact that le LSO is an orchestra relegated today. Ten or five years ago it was an orchestra who made the event with Haitink. And Norman don’t underestimate the quality of the Paris orchestra. You should come to see this orchestra at Paris Philarmonie there are not some strike every week. It’s not the RCO or the BPO or the Runkfund but it’s probably one of the 30 best orchestra in the world. Not top 10. But…

  • Concertgebouw79 says:

I hope that Cleveland will make a lot and a lot of dates in Europe!

  • Jonathan says:

So your headline is incorrect, there is a British orchestra at Lucerne this summer, unless you don’t consider Chineke British????

    • operacentric says:

Not sure they do – they don’t recognise the National Anthem and are somewhat selective in their recruitment. Were it of a different shade, it might be called racist and illegal.

      • Michael says:

Lots of British people detest the national anthem.

The UK national anthem is nothing but a prayer to save the institution of monarchy. Being both atheist and republican, I refuse to sing that trash. When we have an anthem that reflects the hopes, dreams, history and aspirations of the nation as a whole, I might acknowledge the anthem but until then, no chance.

And none of that makes me any less British than a rabid flag waver. It is perfectly possible to be British and republican, the two are not incompatible.

  • Appleby says:

Why would a British orchestra ar Lucerne necessarily be from London? The CBSO has been appearing there regularly since the mid-80s.

  • George says:

The LSO is performing in Gstaad this summer with Pappano.
