The Detroit Symphony has granted tenure to Robyn Bollinger as its concertmaster. The announcement was made by music director Jader Bignamini.

Bollinger, 32, made her debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra aged 12 and has enjoyed an extensive freelance career before trialling in Motown a year ago at Bignamini’s invitation. Both sound delighted that things have worked out.

Comments

  • Anthony Sayer says:

    Who is Detroit?

  • Opus 12 says:

I just watched their live streamed concert of Wynton Marsalis’ Blues Symphony and she and the orchestra are brilliant. One of the best American orchestras I have heard recently.

  • Swiss made says:

Why isn’t this orchestra touring? They are supposed to sound very good

    • MWnyc says:

Touring costs a ton of money. Someone will have to give them that money.

    • Carl says:

They are touring. Heading to Florida this winter, chasing Michiganders who escape the cold (and hopefully escaping the notice of Florida’s far-right governor).

  • Rachelle Goldberg says:

Really thrilled for Robyn. She is a terrific violinist. I first met her when she was a Young Artist at the Starling Delay Violin Symposium Juilliard School

  • Violinist says:

They both may sound delighted but I have a couple of friends there who independently told me the orchestra committee voted overwhelmingly against her, yet the MD still appointed her. That does not make for a happy work place

  • Darrel Hoffman says:

Robyn is wonderful, beautiful, and a fine addition to our world-class orchestra. I just love her.

  • Singeril says:

“Nails” is a very poor use of a word for this headline.

    • Peter San Diego says:

Perhaps the word lacks the distasteful connotation in British slang? I was taken aback to see it, myself.

      • Anthony Sayer says:

As I explained above, we’ve become obliged to understand it. Nothing distasteful about the act in itself.

  • Zandonai says:

How much does she make? LA Phil concertmaster makes 750k

    • Someone less stupid says:

First, what does that have to do with it? Second, there’s no way Chalifour makes anywhere near that when back in 2020 before Covid he was making 560k according to the info available. That’s over 30% increase and that’s just not happening

    • Violinist says:

According to Tax return for the year 2022, Chalifour made 345k plus 40k in some other compensation. Even if they returned to full pay he’s not making more than 550-600k, what planet do you live on?

    • Kyle Wiedmeyer says:

The LA Phil has a budget of over $100 million, Detroit doesn’t. That should answer your question.

    • Anon says:

Too bad that she plays better than he does! She’s a bargain!

    • Gayle Brown UEL says:

      None of our business.

    • OSF says:

A decent amount, to be sure, but less than that.

    • Justsayin says:

Um. No CM in the US makes 750k. Just look at public 990s.

    • Gerry Feinsteen says:

      keyword: LA
would be curious what he/she makes after California taxes, California robberies, and California traffic and compare that to her salary in Detroit with Michigan taxes, Michigan crime, and Detroit traffic.

      Indeed, it’s about the same.

      • Anthony Sayer says:

Love it. Years back, I did Evita in Minneapolis. The company had arrived from Detroit and one of the band, a long-haired, glamorous chappy who probably looked very out of place downtown over there reported that he’d been shot at, apparently just for his appearance. His hair was singed; a couple of inches to the left and he’d have been dead. That was in 1999. Probably even more ‘fun’ these days.

        • Will Haapaniemi says:

It’s popular to hate on Detroit, and I’m not discounting your experience, but it’s not remotely like that for many years. In fact there’s news out today that Detroit is on track for its lowest homicide rate in 60 years.

    • Jack says:

      And your point?

  • John Modell says:

Would this be in the realm of public information?

  • Gladiola says:

A privilege to experience the excellence of our Orchestra, now under the artistic guidance of Maestro Bignamini.
Robyn’s virtuosity is awe-inspiring and her charisma and smile are contagious.
I always look forward to their weekly performances

  • Daniel Reiss says:

Please, it sounds like she was crucified.

  • Ripmobile says:

    She’s terrific.
