Almost 60 percent of students at the Cleveland Institute of Music have signed a petition calling for the dismissal of school president Paul Hogle and board chair Dr. Susan Rothmann.

They say: ‘In an intentional and overbearing consolidation of power, President Paul Hogle and Dr. Susan Rothmann have ushered us into a troubling new direction, resulting in frustration, anxiety, and distress amongst the student body. Consequently, we believe that the well-being of our community and our reputation are at risk.’

They are so right.

I don’t know Paul Hogle, never met him, never had business dealings with him. But he’s been at CIM 7+ years. Why are they now having this crisis? Is it related to the Carlos Kalmar situation?

If anyone out there has real information — not speculation, rumor or gossip – perhaps they can explain, without revealing any confidentialities, of course.

    “They are so right.”

But wait, Norman…. weren’t you just calling the students a “woke mob” only a few weeks ago?

    Did you think we’d forget?

The inmates are running the asylum; time for adults to re-assert a modicum of authority. What can we expect, though, when millions of adults fetishize a teenaged Thunberg?!!

    • Dragonfly says:

Well, what can we expect when millions of adults fetishize a lying, morally thoroughly rotten, dumb draft dodging career criminal ,traitor ,rapist, con man and fraudster who tried to overturn democracy????….Who would be in prison in any civilized country.

As I write this, there are five comments visible on the page. The first (“Larry”) asks if anyone can objectively and factually explain the issues at CIM. The next commenter doesn’t know. The next criticises Norman. The next brings up mental asylums and Greta Thunberg. And the fifth discusses (without naming him) Donald Trump.

This is too often typical of the comments sections here: people performing their own personal grievances which contribute nothing to understanding the actual subject at hand and have no effect but cluttering up the comments to no useful purpose.

So I’m with Larry. I wish I could read someone with an authoritative understanding of what’s happening in Cleveland and why.

No confidence votes come and go and its true, people sign on to online petitions often in the same ways they click “like” on social media. All that said, there’s a problem here. The customers are paying a lot of money and they don’t like what’s going on. CIM has spent a lot of time and effort on outward facing PR efforts and talk about a “moon shot.” Clearly, the things happening inside the institution have gotten beyond the reach of the senior leadership and cannot be sustained this way for long. A place like CIM, can slip away quickly if enrollments start to tumble. They are not Curtis or Julliard in terms of financial stability.

  • Save CIM says:

I know that individuals use this forum as a way to freely share broader points of view that they hold, but unless they are directly involved with the situation those comments are not really valid. The students are not trying to be trendy; they have serious concerns and are addressing them in the most professional manner possible. The faculty and staff hold the same concerns, but the administration has told them to shut up or get out for the past seven years. Since Paul Hogle and Susan Rothmann have isolated themselves and taken an “I know you are but what am I” stance, the only way to get traction is to put this mess out there for the whole world. Maybe then the administration will finally show some humility, admit fault, and resign. When everyone wants you out, why not just leave? We can’t all be incorrect in our assessment. And don’t worry, the students are still practicing… and they sound fantastic.

It’s time for adults to reclaim some authority—the asylum is being governed by its prisoners. I would like to read someone who is knowledgeable about Cleveland’s current situation and the reasons behind https://geometrydashlite.co
