An Israeli violist and violinist who played in several London orchestras is  suing a Hampstead Pilates studio for potentially career-ending injuries that she suffered during training.

Maya Meron, 43, also claims that injuries left her unable to hold her twin sons.

She said: ‘I have long-term nerve damage of two nerves in my left arm and I can’t separate two fingers on my left hand, but music is my life, and I will keep up with the treatment so that I can get back on the global stage in whatever capacity of playing I can.

‘I have experienced the most touching support from so many amazing musicians around the world. Some of the orchestras that I have worked with have even offered me the possibility to play only a part of a concert programme, just so that I can be back on stage playing with other musicians again. This is the goal that I am aiming for.’

  • RM says:

She is clearly a violist, not a violinist

  • Larry W says:

Maya is a viola player. May she have a quick and full recovery.

  • It's a viola says:

That looks an awful lot like a viola.

  • Michael Turner says:

Very sorry to read this. Maya is a fabulous player. Mind you, one slight correction is needed: she’s mostly a violist, as you can see from the photo. I hope she recovers and makes a full return to playing.

Pilates and other extreme forms of physical exercise can pose potential health threats to musicians and other performing artists. Know your limits and beware of over-exertion! Don’t jeapordize your career and your future!

    • Noah says:

The Pilates machine collapsed whilst she was using it- it was not ‘over exertion’.

    • Big Bong says:

      Quite!

Sounds very unfortunate for Ms Meron. However, Pilates is not an extreme exercise, quite the opposite. The problem here, if the reports can be believed, is this is a very unfortunate but very unusual problem with the equipment.

Most musicians should do more exercise and Pilates is as good a choice as any. Exercise protects against overuse injuries, back and neck pain, mood disorders like anxiety and depression, all of which are far more likely to jeopardise a musician’s career.

  • How riduculous! says:

As a budding violinist aged 11years old I chose to give up playing all contact sports to avoid injury.
It is so typical of today’s self- absorbed, suing culture, to blame others for things one shouldn’t be doing if you want to continue playing an instrument! Running won’t hurt your arms, neither will swimming, or walking…choose a sensible sport/relaxation etc that won’t effect your career. #askthe11yo

  • Retired Violist says:

A typical violist who plays the victim card. Please practice your scales and commission a smaller Breacian style viola instead of blaming others. Alexander technique lessons might help 🙂
    Best wishes.
