On Saturday night, violist Delmar Stewart played in the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra  as he had done for most of its concerts since 1977. As ever, he played on an instrument that he had built himself.

Hours later, Delmar passed away, aged 73.

Baltimore Symphony Musicians are devastated by the sudden passing of beloved violist Delmar Stewart, who played his last concert with us Saturday night. Delmar was a kind, gentle, and graceful presence who will be deeply missed by all who were privileged to work with him. Delmar played a viola he made himself in the BSO and helped a great many BSO string players with their instruments, as well as BSM parents of young string players. Delmar said he loved to make young people enjoy their instruments and want to practice. Our deepest sympathies to his family.

Delmar was just a wonderful person. He was always kind, considerate, caring and enthusiastic. I’ll miss him. We all will in Baltimore.

Very sorry to hear of Delmar’s passing. On seeing his name, I immediately remembered having known him as a fellow student at the Cleveland Institute of Music. On checking through a few programs, I’m reminded that he was playing violin at that time in the University Circle Orchestra. I have no doubt that he was a fine person throughout his life. RIP, sir.
