This weekend’s closing concert of the Australian Chamber Music Festival in Townville was greeted with an announcement that the Goldner Quartet were hanging up their bows.

Formed in 1995 and named after the Musica Viva network founder Richard Goldner, the quartet comprises violinists Dene Olding and Dmity Hall, violist Irina Morozova and cellist Julian Smiles.

The Goldners have toured and recorded extensively. They will play their last farewells in 2024.

Breakup? Or, rather, announcement of 2024 farewell tour.

I have been lucky enough to hear them play live. It was the Beethoven “the harp” quartet and they were absolutely fantastic. Their communication between themselves as they played was first rate. There are great recordings of them out there. A very early one are the Symonowski string quartets on Naxos which I highly recommend. Sad to see them end.

We’d known Goldner String Quartet from its inception. Great musicians, real international artists and beautiful human beings. Very sad to see them stop playing together in 2024. What a loss to Australian music.
    ❤️ to Goldners!
