The Canadian violinist Ji Soo Choi has died of lymphoma at a hospital in Oakville, Ontario.

Named by by CBC among 30 Hot Canadian Classical Musicians under 30, Ji Soo won numerous competitions from an early age and was a member of the National Academy Orchestra. Its manager Megan Jones writes:

‘Ji Soo was a popular and devoted colleague. She always played with profound passion and joy. She was an exceptionally gifted violinist with a shining, bright career in her future. Ji Soo Choi received her Bachelor’s degree and her Master of Music at the Juilliard School. Her numerous successes through her short life are almost too many to mention – from a young child music was her vocation and she rose quickly to become a pre-eminent musician, winning important competitions as a soloist and becoming well known for her talent as a chamber musician and a valued orchestra member.’

Thank you for posting this sad story. Jisoo was one of the bright lights on the Canadian music scene. I knew her as a teacher, and close friend and saw her develop from a gifted young teenager at The Royal Conservatory in the powerful mature artist she became. She had a positive joyous outlook on everything and everyone. A truly unusual “ always look on the bright side “ demeanour.
Below is a video of her winning performance from the Glenn Gould School Concerto Competition. This performance lead to her invitation to perform with the orchestra at The Royal Conservatory, a performance that was delayed by Covid. Sadly Jisoo became ill prior to the eventual concert date and never got to realize the Brahms concerto with orchestra. As you can see from this video, she had a lot to say…

It’s a fantastic performance–only someone with a very deep understanding of the piece could have done it. Unbearably beautiful at certain points. So saddens me to think that she has passed away before sharing everything she wished to with the world.

  • ML says:

Very sad loss. Rest in peace, Ji Soo.

  • Arij Farran says:
