The next Principal Conductor of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf/Duisburg will be the current season’s junior Kapellmeister, Vitali Alekseenok.

The Belarus national, 32, won the 2021 Toscanini Conducting Competition in Parma.

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, he has directed the Kharkiv Music Festival, organising concerts in bomb shelters, subways and hospitals.

He will succeed outgoing GMD Axel Kober in 2024 and is a promising homegrown appointment, plucked from the pit of the Rhine.

Hopefully they have struck (Rhein)Gold with him.

    Axel Kober. No “i”.

  • Norabide Guziak says:

But he’s Belorussian. Surely automatically guilty by DNA, no?

    • Hugo Preuß says:

Have you bothered to read the article? Apparently, he has clearly distanced himself from the war. As opposed to some other artists. And that makes a difference in behavior. The obsession with DNA is entirely on your side.

      • Norabide Guziak says:

Humour not really your thing, is it?

        • Hugo Preuß says:

In that case I apologize. But there are so many people around here who would post similar comments and meaning every word of it that it is difficult to distinguish sarcasm from delusion. Again, I apologize from misreading your post.

    • MasterFrame says:

Then you should read his book…

  • Jake Muffett says:

A wonderful musician and colleague. I very much look forward to working with him more next season and hopefully more when he assumes the new role!
