The Russian minister of culture Olga Lyubimova has announced on the Telegram channel that Alexander Rudin will take over from the self-exiled Mikhail Pletnev as artstitic director of the Russian National Orchestra.

Rudin, a former cellist, is chief conductor of the Saratov Philharmonic Orchestra. His son Fedor Rudin is a former

concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic.

The Kremlin statement said that Rudin’s ‘primary task’ was ‘to preserve the team and the traditions’ of the Russian National Orchestra. The RNO’s traditions were created by Pletnev, its founder. Its team has been sacked.

It may be that Alexander Rudin was given no choice in the matter – an offer he could not refuse.

“It may be that Alexander Rudin was given no choice in the matter – an offer he could not refuse.”

Or it may be that he made the decision of his own free will. It’s impossible to know without asking him. And even then there’s no guarantee that he’d give a truthful reply.

Having said that, I do wish you’d apply the same level of nuance whenever you bang on about Furtwängler though. Or even Currentzis.

    Life is complicated.

    • Achim Mentzel says:

Of course, life is complicated. But double standards taste so sweet. The same people who tell us that everything is so complex, for example that there are 60+ gender options, expect black and white thinking here.

  • Alan says:

An offer he couldn’t refuse. You’re very forgiving. what if Curentzis was given a similar offer? Keep your mouth shut or else. We’ll ruin your orchestra and everyone will be out of a job. Would you forgive him too?

    • MuddyBoots says:

Currentzis is Greek, and doesn’t live in Russia. He only works there. He can leave Russia anytime he wants to leave.
Rudin is Russian and doesn’t have that freedom. Not even close to equivalent situations, in fact quite the opposite.

  • Oliver says:

Well, Fedor is not CM of Vienna Phil anymore…as you reported yourself. https://slippedisc.com/2021/05/concertmaster-drops-out-in-vienna/

The whole Russian musician circuit is rotten to the core.

  • Tony Sanderson says:

Better than falling out of a tsll building I suppose.

  • Herbie G says:

Russian Minister of Culture? It’s an oxymoron, like ‘police intelligence’ or ‘industrial action’ (real meaning: ‘industrial inaction’). Chilling memories of Madame Furtseva, Tikhon Khrennikov and other infamous Soviet hacks .

  • An Vedi says:

He is a very professional musician, excellent performer and teacher, and conductor too. Congratulations Aleksander Israilevich!
