The Anglo-Suomi cultural exchange is becoming a fullblown love fest.

Apart from Finland and the UK swapping five music directors, Finland has just chosen a British artistic director for its national opera in Helsinki.

The name in the frame is Thomas de Mallet Burgess, presently head of New Zealand Opera since 2018.

The board’s decision requires approval in a vote across the whole company.

There were 76 applicants for the post, presently held by former opera singer Lilli Paasikivi.
