There has to be a better way to get tickets to people that might have difficulty affording the regular price. There are an awful lot of high earning people under 35 (or 30, as some places set the limit). When I was a struggling graduate student and then contract instructor at a university most of my friends from undergraduate days were doing very well as lawyers, doctors, bankers, etc.

When I was young, the age limit was a lot lower. I was not a high earner till about 35 and could have used low price tickets a little longer than they were available to me.

Looks as if today’s youth is not expected, as we were, to stand on your own two feet by about the time you are 21.

But to address your specific point — and I knew students, let alone young workers, who ran sports cars and lived in fancy condos — anything else would presumably require a means test, not a tool many people like to have employed.

The only way I can see to make it equitable is to apportion a percentage of tickets at the low price on a first-come basis. But we all know how rapacious the rich are, and they would probably be first in line, so what can you do?

There are concessionary prices for older people. It is that mass between 35 and 65, not all of whom are as well off as Boris and Rishi might wish us to believe, that stand to be left out. The ones doing most of the work, often for less of a bite at the apple, and who could just do with a nice concert at the end of a working week.

I’ll not pay more than 5 BP for Eric Lu recital or not to go at all.
