Randall Goosby wins $25k Avery Fisher grant

The young American violinist is the standout winner among five soloists chosen annually for career advancement.

The others are: Steven Banks, saxophone; Ji Su Jung, marimba and solo percussion; Mackenzie Melemed, piano; and Jonathan Swensen, cello.

    Did he won because he is the best artist??? I suspect let’s say Johnathan Swensen had not as many chances …

      There is no winner. All recipients of the Avery Fisher Career Grant are treated equally. Of the five, however, Goosby, who is a brilliant and charismatic musician, has perhaps the most career momentum at the moment, and had already been receiving a lot of attention.

        Not just momentum, but prospects for a solid future career. Bravo for the recognition and encouragement.

        Correct. Not a competition. I believe awards are made using anonymous recommendations much like MacArthur Grants.

        The track record of artists receiving this award are quite impressive. They do go on to do great things in our field.
