Taiwan mourns award-winning soprano, 58
UncategorizedOperanostalgia reports the death of Zoe Hwang, a bronze medallist in the 1988 Queen Elisabeth singing contest in Brussels.
News of her passing was conveyed by the conductor Naoki Tokuoka, who compiled the memorial video below.
Zoe went on to become a popular presenter of classical programmes in Taipei.
It is surprisingly brief and insulting. The last line captured nothing of Zoe Hwang’s career as a musician, her talents, and her contribution in classical music! It’s an extreme disrespect to all those who have been graced by her. Fire the editor that could not write decent news article.
This has been a hard week since I received news of my dear friend’s sudden passing.

My dear friend Zoe.
We met during my last year at Juilliard. A bronze-medalist at Queen Elizabeth Competition, she became a famous classical music presenter and an important conduit in all artistic circles in Taiwan.
Zoe was uniquely and immensely gifted. Authored and published ten books; spoke several languages fluently, including Polish which recently immersed herself in, and was preparing to present a recital of all 17 songs by Chopin when she passed on 1/15. An official guest representing Taiwan at Chopin Summer Festival in Duszniki-Zrój, she went back to Taipei and promptly inaugurated the Chopin Outdoor Concerts during the Pandemic. Such a charismatic figure, warm, gracious spirit, and a magnificent artist and friend.
Not often, but some friendships come as pure gifts in one’s life. Her friendship was such a gift in mine. She will be greatly missed.
Zue-Fung (Zoe) Hwang and I were best friends four years at Juilliard UG.
We re-connected only 2 months ago on FB and have not heard from her for a few weeks.
I am shocked and saddened by her sudden passing.
If anyone could please contact me as to how she passed so suddenly I would greatly appreciate.
Condolences to Zoe’s Husband, Sister and All Family.
Mimi S. I.
