The conductor Simon Rattle and his wife, the mezzosoprano Magdalena Kozena, were awarded honorary doctorates today by the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts in Brno.

Not sure about the outfits.

They look like chorus in Doctor Faustus.

  • Bill says:

Of course, he was already Dr. Rattle. Oxford gave him one more than two decades ago.

Surely from the Ministry of Funny Costumes.

  • Freewheeler says:

I received my honorary doctorate by email from a website in Tonga. It was only $25. No fuss or bother with silly costumes, lifetime experience or academic research.

  • Barry Guerrero says:

I’m not in any way denigrating either of them, but have they really done that much for Janacek’s cause? . . . Perhaps so – more than I was led to believe.

    • MWnyc says:

If that’s a serious question, Barry, the answer is that this isn’t about Janáček at all. Rattle and Kožená (a native of Brno) were simply honored by Brno’s university for the performing arts, which happens to be named after the city’s most famous composer.

  • Very talented man,I like him. However perhaps a little naive about Europe, rather like some 1930s upper middle class.

Congratulations to them both. I think those hats rock!

    Is it Noddy University?

  • Rob says:

    Just revolting.
