First clip???? There was a longer teaser trailer released several months ago.

  • CYM says:

From short excerpts I saw and heard, it looks like Bernstein superb musical score has been adapted and butchered for this remake…
    – Perhaps a disaster in the making…?

  • Dave T says:

The trailer that was run earlier this year was more enticing by far.

  • Jan Kaznowski says:

It’s ben available for several weeks now, but thanks anyway

  • V.Lind says:

    I amaze myself: I didn’t hate it.

  • msc says:

I will probably see it, but I am skeptical. If the book is still Sondheim’s, what is Kushner’s role? He is mediocre at best and has had most of success from hitching himself to popular ideological causes. Jerome Robbins was a genius. Peck has a good reputation, but I doubt he is yet Robbins’ equal. The music suits Dudamel well.

    • Stuart says:

Music by Bernstein, lyrics by Sondheim and book by Laurents – I guess Kushner is smartening up the book. Kushner mediocre? Angels in America (both parts)?
The screenplays to Munich and Lincoln? Have you any real interaction with anything that he has written?

“If the book is still Sondheim’s, what is Kushner’s role?”

Sondheim only wrote the song lyrics. The original book was in fact by Arthur Laurents, who is safely dead.

  • James Weiss says:

I just threw up in my mouth. Egads. West Side Story is the most overrated musical of all time.

    • GB Fan says:

Obviously all your taste is in your mouth. Please don’t put your ignorance on display here. You should consider commenting on sports where stupidity is acceptable. Overrated… really?

    • Tom Phillips says:

Your philistinism should truly embarrass you. I know no other musical that has ever even approached the level of genius Bernstein achieved here (and in none other of his compositions).

  • bet says:

Another trailer out (since September!), much more indicative of what Spielberg has done here.

I see what he and Dudamel are trying to do, I don’t see the originality or purpose what they are trying to do.

It’s a remake, of a work that needed no remake, at least not THIS remake.

    • V.Lind says:

I just went and found it. The set, the dance room — very similar to what I remember. The actors at least look Latino, and that girl projects charisma in spades. In a few seconds she out-Mariaed Natalie Wood.

I tried to watch the original a few months ago — hadn’t seen it since I was a teen, at the cinema — and despite having loved it then and still liking a few of the songs, I could not get into it. I don’t generally like musicals, but this and one or two others had been exceptions. But this one I couldn’t watch — I will certainly try the new one.

  • operacentric says:

Strong echoes of the original – even the colour. Fun to have a trailer for a musical with no music in it!

  • J Barcelo says:

At least they didn’t try to bring it into modern times like so many bad present day opera directors do. I’m waiting to hear the re-scored music. Sid Ramen and Irwin Kostal did a brilliant job in the original; it’s going to be hard to improve upon. And Robert Wise was no slouch as a director, either. I really hope that Bernstein doesn’t get shoved to the side.

  • drummerman says:

I’m trying to think of other movie musicals which have been re-made. I don’t think it’s many at all, maybe none? I am at a loss as to why Spielberg would want to spend millions to re-make “WSS.”

  • Luke says:

From the snippet, it seems Maria’s accent is unnatural and affected. If so it’s enough to ruin the move and a huge blunder. Nothing worse in a movie than an actor with a fake accent.

  • Tom Phillips says:

The trailer we see in movie theatres is much longer (over 2 minutes) and much better than this with the beautiful music of “Tonight” played in several different contexts. Everything suggests that this film will be a triumph (Ansel Elgort in particular is an excellent singer as well as actor).
