The death has been announced of Peter P. Pachl, head of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra and a fount of ideas across German music and opera over four decades.

Pachl, who was 68, founded a Siegfried Wagner Society to promote the Master’s neglected son, directed opera at many houses including English National Opera, taught at any number of universities and never stood still.

His loss will be felt right across the art form.

I met him on a cold winter day in Bayreuth 1986, old archive building under the roof and we had some good talks. We met at the Festspielhaus during many summers, in Munich, Berlin and other places in Europe. He might have joined now his charming mother whom I met also several times. May he travel in peace into another dimension.

    Very tragic news.
A brilliant mine of information with a special interest in producing neglected works (one of which has it’s premiere tomorrow – https://pppmt.de/?team=caecilia), his valuable work was far from done and he will be greatly missed in many circles.

Very sad news. Peter Pachl was an idealist, in a cynical time. It was his inspiration to program a Siegfried Wagner 150th birthday concert, June ‘19 in the Berlin Philharmonie.
(I played the violin concerto, and enjoyed a meal with him after)
    A true gentleman….
