The long-standing Long-Thibaud-Crespin Competition, founded in 1943 by a famed pianist, violinist and singer, has called off next year’s event after its board of directors disintegrated.

Those resigning are the La Scala director Dominique Meyer, the violinist Renaud Capucon and the pianist Bertrand Chamayou.

They reportedly quit at the start of the year but no successors have been named and the competition’s future looks uncertain.

I have heard that the same thing is starting to happen at the Antal Dorati conducting competition in Budapest which is due to start within the next two weeks. Someone should keep an eye on that situation there too.

“The long-standing Long-Thibaud-Crespin Competition, founded in 1943 by a famed pianist, violinist and singer” … what a multi-talented individual!

Indeed, it gave me a good larf as did your remark. Just to spoil the fun -or maybe, add to it, the multi-talented person only took up singing in 2011 (surely quite an advanced age for someone born in 1943).

  • David K. Nelson says:

NL’s write-up suggests that Regina Crespin played a role in founding this competition in 1943. That is incorrect; she was still a student and yet to make her professional debut in 1943. It is a fairly recent development that the competition was opened to singers and that her name was added to those of Thibaud and Long.
