He always scores first.

  • Darrell says:

According to Universal Music his Johann Strauss Orchestra is the biggest private orchestra in the world. He is first a businessman and second a violinist and whatever.

  • V.Lind says:

But he’s backing the wrong horse…

  • Robert Levin says:

I find it interesting that you never actually hear André play!

  • Sue Sonata Form says:

That’s why it’s so annoying going to the Musikverein; you can’t sing along, clap, rock from side to side, dance and sip wine!! Look lovingly into the face of your partner while enjoying truly syrupy fare. Only during the once-a-year Radetzky March can you clap at the Musikverein, but then only for a very short time. Hardly seems fair, really!!!

I love Rieu’s costumed orchestra, who look at each other and grimace or smile, sopranos and tenors who sing the repertoire of Mario Lanza, faux sets, Rieu’s mullet haircut, the cloying schtick of his commentary….so many attractive things to draw one to an Andre Rieu ‘event’.

I feel sorry for the musicians who attended the same music schools as musicians from major orchestras and who don’t have to dress like 18th Century Barbie Dolls.

  • Dragonetti says:

He gives a certain audience exactly what they want to hear. Job done.
I certainly don’t like his style but so what? His target audience isn’t the same as would attend the Musikverein, RFH or wherever. They have a brilliant night out, he makes money and a good few musicians are fully employed. Let’s stop this snide sniping and let him get on with what he does. It’s not as if there aren’t plenty of alternatives if you don’t like his performances.

    • V.Lind says:

And didn’t this very site report a few months ago on his keeping his musicians fully paid despite cancellation of events due to Covid? I can’t imagine going to one of his concerts, but I have no problem with him, his orchestra or what he does. He appears to walk the walk.

  • Meg Bloodworth says:

If you do not like andre rieu music or as a man why watch why make snide comments he and his orchestra soloist etc bring so much happiness to so many also the people who are included in the family of rieu give time for there fans Bela mavrak came to the retirement village that I live in walked in was amazed and said heaven but Bela only had 2 hours until they were off to there next venue but Bela gave up his time

  • Tiredofitall says:

He does what he does very well…and with apparently as much joy as he gives his audiences.

Rieu found a niche…and “serious” classical music organizations are now desperately trying to find one.

Dickens had it right in Nicholas Nickleby when he said ““If a man would commit an inexpiable offence against any society, large or small, let him be successful. They will forgive any crime except that.”
