Piano professor dies of Covid, husband is critically ill

The Federal University of Amazonas in brazil has announced ‘with a feeling of irreparable loss’ the death of Professor Vanessa Monteiro Lameira, of its piano faculty. Vanessa, who died yesterday of Covid-19,  leaves two daughters, aged 7 and 5, and a husband, Robinson, who is fighting for his life in hospital.

    This is horrific and terribly sad. This virus is no joke. So pray that her children have caretakers during this terrible time. Prayers to her husband.

    How dreadful. Manaus, where the university is located, is having a hellish time. It was — mistakenly, it turns out — thought to have gained herd immunity via infection in the first wave, so restrictions were totally relaxed and vaccines were routed elsewhere. Now a second wave has hit the unprepared city with ferocity. I wonder if Bolsonaro is still dismissing the virus as causing merely sniffles.
