I am devastated by the death of Dmitri Smirnov, a Russian composer who settled in England in 1991 and, with his wife Elena Firsova, made a significant contribution to musical life. He was admitted to hospital in Watford last week with coronavirus.

I have known the family from the time they left Russia. My thoughts are with Elena and their children, Alissa and Philip.

I will write a fuller appreciation shortly. This is a time to mourn.
