Latvian director dies at 60
mainThe Latvian film and opera director Andrejs Žagars has died after a long illness.
Immersed in Wagner, he was director of Latvian National Opera from 1996 to 2013.
He owned several cafes in Riga and was a restless entrepreneur.
Very sad news. He was a very positive and energetic person. Sympathy to his family. R.I.P.
He seemed to have vision and ambition for the Latvian National Opera. I understand that it was he who appointed 25 years old Andris Nelsons as Principal Conductor of the Latvian National Opera from 2003.
