Hey – it’s 3 degrees F, with about 2-3 feet of snow forecast. Buffalo folks are a tough bunch, but sometimes discretion is the better part of valor.
– From a BPO fan and former Buffalonian.
That’s -19.4 C. That’s NOTHING in Buffalo. Here in Canada the – 30s don’t shut things down. (And we won’t even talk about Winnipeg).
There is a Polar Vortex embracing a good deal of the midwest in the US — Chicago is experiencing -45 and worse, and the Dakotas even colder. It would not surprise me if Buffalo’s weather is worse than you say — it often is — and perhaps the local meteorologists know it, hence the closure.
Otherwise, they are just SISSIES.
It’s likely more than the near-zero cold, because 2-3 feet of fresh snow on top of the cold is miserable business — even in Winnipeg or Thunder Bay or Sault Ste. Marie.
Where I am (Milwaukee WI) the US Postal Service cancelled today due to cold, in particular the wind/chill index. That’s right, the folks with the motto “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.” I was out for ten minutes filling bird feeders. I was wearing leather gloves. Once I got back in I think I would have torn my fingertips to shreds had I attempted so much as a scale on the fiddle.
Well the CSO is in Tokyo tonight so presumably they’re still on. But other concerts at other locales in the city have been cancelled.
The program is moving ahead in Minnesota on Thursday, which has had significantly colder weather this week than Buffalo has.
… But not the 2-3 feet of snow.
The Minnesota Orchestra canceled a concert last spring because of snow conditions. https://www.minnesotaorchestra.org/buy/tickets/browse-calendar/eventdetail/942/-/canceled-liszt-piano-concerto
The headline says it was cancelled for cold, not snow. I agree if there were 2-3 feet of snow that you would have to cancel. Also, if the program involved youth groups that it should also be cancelled as we don’t want children putting themselves in danger to get to a concert. But these important details were not disclosed to us!
Tonight’s concert involved a youth orchestra. I don’t think they wanted to make parents schlep kids around in these conditions.
