The Chinese composer Tan Dun has been named Dean of the Bard College Conservatory of Music.

‘We are delighted that Tan Dun, a conductor, composer, and artist whose work bridges cultures and genres and embraces a wide definition of music, will lead Bard’s Conservatory of Music,’ said Bard College President Leon Botstein.

Everybody is trying to recruit the cream of Chinese students.

I am failing to find online anything about whether he has any relevant administrative experience. Can anyone help?

    • aj says:

He does not need experience as long as his name
attracts Chinese ($$$$$$)students …if he fails
a new dean will be quickly found.

Once I walked passed Chinatown and saw a lawer’s office with a street sign proudly announcing “Our Lawyers Are Jewish!”. It is also a known fact that there are many under-educated white people finding employment in China simply on the merit of being white. The point, to put it crassly (but not more crassly than the original post), Chinese come to the Americas to meet white people, not other Chinese. So to suggest, as Mr. Lebrecht and his choir did, that Tan Dun “win” the position simply because he is Chinese and not his professional qualifications, is ludicrous.
