The EU’s official composer has died
mainThe arrangement of Beethoven’s Ode to Joy as the official European Union anthem was made in 1989 by the French composer Claude Langevin, who died on September 8 at the age of 87.
Langevin also wrote, on commission from Brussels, a Europa Sinfonia and a Symphonie Liberté.
A very quiet Europa Sinfonia…. and inspired by John Cage. But much too long.
PS: My sound equipment had temporarily fallen out, so my impression was that it was a silent movie.
Because he composed an arrangement of the ‘official’ EU anthem, why does that make him ‘the EU’s official composer?’ Was he? Did he receive a string of onions, a pair of lederhosen and a glass of white beer as payment?
In fact, L. van Beethoven was the official EU composer, being – as always – much ahead of his time, but he never received such things.
Because he composed contemporary pieces for the EU besides making a contemporary arrangement of the Ode to Joy.Geirge
