End of line for NY Phil’s first female violinist
mainWhen Carol Webb joined the New York Philharmonic in 1977, she was the first woman to play in its violin section.
Now, 39 years on, she has decided to lay down her bow.
A Juilliard graduate, she appeared as soloist with the orchestra three times and has been active in chamber music around the New York area.
We wish Carol a happy retirement.
Marilyn Dubow joined the NY Philharmonic in the fall of 1971.
Dubow plays in the 2nd violins.
Yes, she does but Norman failed to make the distinction of 1st vs 2nd violins, claiming that “When Carol Webb joined the New York Philharmonic in 1977, she was the first woman to play in its violin section.”
What, you never heard a conductor in rehearsal ask to hear “violins… and seconds”? 😛
That’s like men and tenors.
No, in 43 years with the Chicago Symphony I’ve never once heard the conductor say that.
