It’s hotting up for music manuscripts
mainThe Bach Prelude that was secretively put up for sale at Christie’s by Japanese owners fetched £2.5 million yesterday.
The hammer price was at the very top of the auctioneer’s rosiest hopes, and way above most other expectations.
It suggests the market for manuscripts is heating up again and that the Mahler Second Symphony autograph, which is being sold at Sothebys in November, is likely to break all known records.
