Mis-understood?
Yes, I don’t quite understand that one either. Having heard the perf. in question though, I can say that it’s one of the most gripping accounts of this marvellous score that I’ve heard in many a moon! The Berliners are on to a good thing, I’d say.
In the US I’d say not misunderstood, just ignored – to our loss. I’ve heard it with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Barenboim (1972) and Zinman (c. 1994) and I’m not sure they’ve performed it any other times in the last half century.
I’ve very much enjoyed what I’ve been able to hear of the Petrenko performance, despite being frustrated by my ISP’s buffering issues. (Curse you, Comcast!)
Coming to Berlin soon-
