The fellowship and organist at New College, Oxford, is as close as it gets to an archbishop’s post in music.

The seat’s vacant. Apply here.

New College, Oxford, in association with The Faculty of Music in the University of Oxford, proposes to appoint a Tutorial Fellow in Music and Organist at New College, with a University Lectureship in Music, with effect from 1 September 2014, or as soon as possible thereafter. • Tim Benjamin says:

“also send seven copies of your application documents” – !? The photocopier at the faculty of music is still broken then, I see!

  • Martin says:

I recall a phone call I made after readin a job advert. It ended like this:

Martin: “Can I send you the application via email?”

Company: “No, we can only ccept them via regular mail.”

Martin: “Ah, ok, then you’re not the right employer for me. Bye.”

  • I wonder if they’ll appoint a woman? Anyone? No. I wouldn’t take on that bet either!

    • 18mebrumaire says:

Not so fast, George. New College houses a number of distinguished female academics (see their website Indeed, the present college chaplain is a woman. So, place your bets now!

    • MWnyc says:

George, how large is the potential applicant pool? How many women in the UK train for careers as professional Anglican church organist/choir directors?

(It occurs to me that if one were to pursue that career path at a level that would qualify one for an Oxbridge college job, one would have to start serious organ study by the beginning of secondary school if not earlier and would have to have sung in church choirs since age 10.)

  • Peter says:

Tut tut…. You talk about New College Chapel and then use a picture of the university music faculty. So many better ones of the chapel or college are available.
