Manhattan mourns piano prof
RIPThe Manhattan School of Music has announced the death of Solomon Mikowsky, a member of the piano faculty since 1969. He was 88 years old.
His students included Jenny Q Chai, Simone Dinnerstein, Kirill Gerstein, Youngho Kim, Sofya Melikyan, Misha Namirovsky and Aaron Shorr.
I met Dr. Solomon Mikowsky for the first time at the age of 17 years and he was a very kind soul. I have had the chance to meet and play for him numerous times.
Deeply saddened by his passing.
That list speaks to his superb mentorship. RIP
Hopefully Kirill Gerstein will write about his teacher, and SD will alert us.
Soon after emigrating from Cuba, he taught at the Henry Street Settlement Music School in New York City, and was my first piano teacher, for two years. I reconnected with him a decade later at Manhattan School of Music during my entrance exams for their DMA program. Much of what I learned about the piano, playing it and listening to it, came from him.
And Adam Kent.
Certainly a very dedicated teacher, but vastly over-rated.
