  • JB says:

Russia, Germany, and Israel. Three countries with spotless historical records

    • norman lebrecht says:

      And your point is?

      • Rodger says:

So why isn’t the headline “German, Russian and Israeli make La Maestra Final”? (Or choose your order.) Clearly there’s some point being made in calling out the one finalist’s nationality.

      • Alan says:

The same point you’ve been making about Russia for two years. Self defence is one thing. Wholesale slaughter something else entirely.

Time to start banning Israeli artists like Russian ones if they don’t call out their murderous regime.

    • Tamino says:

Name three countries with spotless historical records!

    • Fronk says:

      Historical ?

Surely inspite of,NOT because of…as pointedly alluded to by the Nash, surely ?

    • Romana Clef says:

You’re actually comparing Israel to Russia and Germany? Jews were persecuted in both of those countries.

  • Peter says:

Bar Avni is a fabulous conductor . Her Britten at the semi finals was outstanding and displayed drama supported by marvelous rhythmic sense

  • Achim Mentzel says:

A disastrous signal. Are women really such weak conductors that they compete in a separate competition in which men are not allowed because a man could be better than them and take one of the top places away from them? Or even worse: Just because there are more men than women conductors in the world? Apart from the fact that this whole event violates the European Union’s Equality Act, exactly this kind of “positive discrimination” is a complete step backwards in terms of gender equality. By the way, when is the next competition for black people coming? Or transsexuals? Or queer people? Why then don’t make a separate competition for every gender?

    • Diane says:

As a matter of a fact you are almost right! Just a slight correction – it’s men who are so weak that they needed to discourage / block / disturb / discriminate women from the orchestral conducting profession throughout the conducting history, so they can feel free to be mediocre, and still get the job.

    • Used to be dirigent says:

Well actually there are (were) few job positions (conductor’s) for ONLY women and even non-gender people. So it’s pretty much the moment of time when the lucky ticket for “white-man-conductor” was already taken (KM) and for the next opened slot we have to wait another decade or two. I can say it few more times: don’t do conducting, it’s very easy, doesn’t demand any musical training (your PR and agency can cover it) etc. those who want to be a conductor are just selfish people. They want to be famous, to make money and pretend to be a very valuable person in the (music) world. Actually there is nothing wrong with it, but their footprint in history is pretty miserable.

  • M2N2K says:

The point of the headline may be: a person from a small country against two from large ones, or – a person from a country that is faced with existential threats against two from countries that are threatened by no one, or – a person form a young country against two from much older ones, or – a person from Middle East (Asia) against two from Europe (or at least partly in Europe).

  • Romana Clef says:

And now you can say that she won! Many congratulations to Bar Avni for an outstanding performance.

  • Greg says:

Regardless of political affiliation, I think we can all agree: weird headline.
