Cecilia Bartoli, Artistic Director of the Salzburg Whitsun Festival, is celebrating the local lad in 2024. She says:

‘To think about the amount of marvellous music Mozart created in an unbelievably short space of time reduces us to awe and humble silence. He created a universe, a world of its own which gives us endless pleasure. It may surprise you that since taking on the position of artistic director at the Salzburg Whitsun Festival in 2012, I have never focused on Mozart here. So I thought ‘wenn schon, denn schon’ (‘If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well’), and decided to dedicate four exceptional days to my favourite composer, with humour and Mozartkugeln included. Because more than anything, I would like to transmit the joy of singing, performing and listening to Mozart’s music.’

  • Willym says:

I have long been a fan of Cecilia Bartoli the opera singer not so much of Cecilia Bartoli the Whitsun Festival artistic director. There was a time when the Festival was a mixture of known and lesser known – often younger – performers – in unusual rep. It was a touch expensive but still affordable as were hotel restaurant etc prices in town . It has now become a high priced extension of the summer festival with celebrity performers (when they show up) and fairly standard rep (pax 2016’s West Side Story).

  • Send Out the Clowns. says:

Who thought it was good idea to award her such a position? Her comment does not make her sound very intelligent.

  • Madeleine Richardson says:

Gerard Mortier staged a great deal of Mozart at his time in Brussels to the exclusion of almost every other composer during some seasons. I began to find it a bit boring in the end.

  • Paul B says:

A mosquito voice who managed to get into the likes of some opera mobs (Pereira), and therefore managed to get the positions of intendants… Her statement and her stage appearances seems to show a pretty foolish person

  • David A. Boxwell says:

I’ve never associated the concept of “humble silence” with Ms. Bartoli.

  • ML says:

It would be great if Ms Bartoli could give promising talented young musicians and singers opportunities to perform Mozart at this festival. Here’s hoping….
