It is generally accepted among Formula-1 followers that the Dutchman Max Verstappen has drained all excitement and personality out of the sport.

So, in order to liven up his act, Max has called in the waltz king, from his home town of Limburg.

Excited?

  • henry williams says:

max is not a boring driver. at the moment
he is the worlds best. i understand f1.
i go to the races in the UK and Europe.
nobody can beat him. but for the fans
the sport is boring because nobody
    overtakes him

    • Nick2 says:

He should never have won his first world championship. It was a racing director making up rules after rain halted the final lap of the final race that allowed him with his car’s new tyres to overtake Lewis Hamilton who was ahead of him on his old tyres who otherwise would have easily won his 8th world championship. That racing director soon disappeared from F1 but his error was inexplicably allowed to
stand. Since then, though, no question that he has been the better driver in a much better car. And Andre Rieu’s presence last weekend was still utterly silly.

  • Jean says:

Lewis with Lang Lang was much, much more interesting (if people still remember?)

  • Clem says:

Ok. Norman clearly ran out of musicians to bash, we now get the sports people, the actors and the influencers. Refreshing.

  • Hamilton #1 says:

What? How? Verstappen was a debonair bad boy who wrecked the scene when he debuted. He injected a lot of excitement and risk into a sport that was becoming stale. Now he rose to the top, and is the man to beat. Stick to classical music!

    • Nick2 says:

Andre Rieu and his stupidly dressed band performed before the start. I guess the organizers thought that was classical music. I know he is popular among some people but to have him grinning before an F1 race looked just stupid!

  • weihan_wang says:

Verstappen is not boring, his sport is.

  • Kiku says:

    bad taste

  • christopher storey says:

Well, as a lifelong follower of motor sport, I think there is something in what you say . But, the reasons for it need examination , and some of the causes IMHO are

    1. the cars are too wide

    2. the permitted technology allows far too much groundforce

    3. the ridiculous drag reduction system gives too much advantage to following cars and results inevitably in the fastest cars automatically reaching the front irrespective of driver skill

The overall result has been a wholesale reduction in overtakes : sometimes an entire race will contain only a handful of such manoeuvres

  • Sue Sonata Form says:

Group of cheerleaders heard at Verstappen podium after Formula-1 win:

“Is there a role for Andre Rieu in Formula -1?

“Give me an N, give me an O”.

    • henry williams says:

none at all. the people that like
andre rieu like to sing and dance
      to the music
not much chance at a f1 race.

  • jim says:

The most boring driver wants help from the most boring entertainer?

  • Diane Valerie says:

Isn’t ‘Limburg’ a province in both Belgium and the Netherlands? As far as I know, the home towns of Messrs. Rieu and Verstappen are Maastricht (Netherlands) and Hasselt (Belgium).

  • Chrysostomos Chrysostomou says:

Obviously, someone who knows nothing of Formula 1. To call Max boring, maybe you never followed a weekend of Formula 1.
On the subject of The Dutch Grand Prix, I must say that it was the most spectacular and entertaining pre-race event ever! Seeing the fans rocking with the stewards and the orchestra! Simply, wow! Best event I ever witnessed!
Congratulations to the organisers and the Dutch nation!

    • Suzanne Sharlotte says:

Totally agree – I was there and I thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment actually, far better than the usual garbage they put on at F1 events and our whole grandstand was dancing along to the blue Danube waltz. There is a place for Rieu, he entertains and popularises and that can only be good for getting people into concert halls ultimately

  • Orchestral Musician says:

Having live musicians performing anthems is a relatively new trend at Grands Prix, and it adds a bit of class to the events. I thought the pre-race performance by the choir and orchestra was excellent.
What surprised me was the dignified and beautiful live performance by Emma Heesters of the Dutch National Anthem during the podium ceremony. A far cry from the days when a brief recorded excerpt was blasted.
Max is NOT a boring driver!!
Adrian Newey is not a boring designer.
Christian Horner is not a boring Team Principal.
They are all great at what they do, and work great as a team, along with the hundreds of other employees at Red Bull Racing.

  • kuma says:

Max boring? Hardly! He just does not make any mistakes nor all of his RB teams. Looking forward to his contiuous wins.
btw I’m not a Max fanboi. I was so glad to see Alonso back on the podium.

  • Officer Krupke says:

Wonderful. Rieu has a huge following and is a generous employer… which is a lot more than most covered on this site.
