We hear that the new principal conductor of the ORT-Orchestra della Toscana is to be the unknown Diego Ceretta.

At 26, he is described as ‘one of the youngest Principal Conductors ever appointed in Italy.’

He succeeds the well-established Daniele Rustioni. The conductor emeritus is James Conlon.

The ORT also has a new artistic diretor, Daniele Spini.

Well, Toscanini made his conducting debut at 18. But it was in South America whilst on tour.

I’m quite nostalgic about the days when FrauGeigerin would come and rant on articles such as this one. Guess Mäkelä really shut her up….
I hope she’s doing well, God bless her!

    • ViennaCalling says:

You’re right. As a member of the RSO Vienna she’s probably busy with different things these days…

    • FrauGeigerin says:

I am fine, thank you. What shut me up was too much playing and too much teaching. Trying to explain some people that professional conducting should only come as a profession (not as training) once a musician has had the experience to be a professional musician, is too tiring and a lost cause.

But since you missed it so much, here it goes: people want their conductors as I would like a lover for an afair (if I sought one): young, handsome, energetic, charismaric, and fit. Too many people want to SEE conductors and go home thinking “wow, that guy/gal is really something”… never mind the music!

Don’t know this guy, and probably he’s very talented and perhaps a good guest conductor once every two seasons. What I am sure is that it is highly unlikely he can really improve a very good orchestra’s performance and set the standards as chief conductor.

Oh, well, what do I know…?

  • Jammer Hammer Hummer says:

    Diego is a gifted musician.
