The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts announced today that President Biden, First Lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff will attend the 45th Kennedy Center Honors on Sunday, December 4. Seated in the presidential box in the Opera House adjacent to the Honorees, they will join an audience of over 2,000 to pay tribute to George Clooney, Amy Grant, Gladys Knight, Tania León, and members of U2 (Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr.). This is the second consecutive year of the Biden-Harris Administration in which the President, First Lady, Vice President, Second Gentleman have attended the nation’s highest award for lifetime achievement in the arts. The Kennedy Center is a living presidential memorial to the country’s 35th President, John F. Kennedy.

Ever since the Reagan years, it has been the goal of conservatives to defend, or at least take a chain saw, to the national endowments for the arts and the humanities, and also Public Television and NPR. When Newt Gingrich took control of the House in 1994, he forced President Clinton to accept massive, draconian cuts to all of these. Obama succeeded in restoring some, but not most, of those cuts. Today’s conservatives are no different. They have contempt for public support for any type of culture. You don’t need names and addresses. The record is everywhere. Actions speak louder than words.

Per previous Violinophile comment on arts funding: I meant defund, not defend. Reagan wanted to “zero out” those agencies, to give even bigger tax cuts to the already super rich, mostly. As do today’s so-called conservatives and MAGAs.
yeah, Reagan was all about strengthening the Plutocracy. Give it all to the rich, and “trickle down” some to the masses. He succeeded to a high degree. The US is a schoolbook example of a plutocracy, yet its people delusional about their political realities. (and arguably the majority in that country might be better off being ruled by a plutocracy than by articulating their political will themselves?)

What does this statement even mean? The President (any President) has never named the recipients of the Kennedy Center Honors.

Probably the first and only time religious singer Amy Grant will ever be called a leftist. The people in charge of this show are obliged by the fact it is on commercial television (CBS) and the network requires a decent audience, to have mostly popular culture types, usually with one or two exceptions. If the audience drops too much, CBS won’t carry it. That’s just reality. Blame the society, not them. If you want a more highbrow show, put it on PBS. Most performers tend to be liberal, but that is just a reflection of the arts generally. I don’t think that is necessarily the goal. At least some of these are of a little interest. It’s the world we live in.
